Poison Tree (Barringtonia asiatica)
I saw these fruits in the New Public Market in San Jose in Puerto Princesa. My curiosity drove me to ask the seller what those star-shaped things are, noting the curative properties written on a piece of wood. She responded that it is called "bulubitoon", a fruit of a tree growing along the shores of Palawan which is known to cure tumor (?), pigsa (hemorrhoids), goiter and remove cysts. She went on to say that bulubitoon is a traditional medicine of people living in the Visayas, a clump of islands in the midwestern portion of the Philippines. Going on further in my inquiry, I asked information on how to use the hard, nutty fruit. She said, you will need to cut open the fruit and scrape off the meat then apply on the affected area. Allegedly, it is an effective remedy and has been used by locals for many generations.
I thought this is important information that must be shared. As usual I went to my favorite writing site and wrote about these fruits. I discovered, upon searching the internet, that the scientific name of the fruit is Barringtonia asiatica. It's redundant writing it here again so I just posted a link below for people interested in knowing more about this apparent cure to many kinds of skin problems which the local people thought worked.
